Today's Guardian carried a very interesting article, by Dorian Lynskey, called The Great Divide. It highlights the careers of two rappers in Palestine; Kobi Shimoni and Tamer Nafar. "Both 25, both Israeli and both MCs."
However Shimoni is a right wing, Zionist, and an ardent supporter of Ariel Sharon, (The Butcher of Sabra and Chatila)while Nafar is, "a leftwing Arab who compares Jews to Nazis."
I don't usually do any music reviews, as I prefer to leave that kind of thing in Big Ell's hands, but this one caught my eye. It has elements of Romeo and Juliet, and of Tom Robbins', Skinny Legs and All and speaks volumes about our times.
Wouldn't it be best if these two just had an Intra-Palestine rap-off, instead of this ruinous Intifada, and put the Apache helicopters, Caterpillar bulldozers, IDF snipers, and suicide bombers away? The stonethrowers can stay, because we will always need a fearless youth that speaks truth to power, at any cost.
